Security Guard Training

Effective January 1, 2025, Senate Bill 760 establishes standards and certification requirements for Security Guards in Maryland, including training mandates for Security Guard certification. There are specific training requirements for both initial certification and renewal of certification. The Maryland State Police (MSP) sets the requirements of the training that will be accepted. The MD Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) is responsible for reviewing and approving the training programs. The Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission (PTSC) has approved mandated objectives to be taught in these courses.

Program approval process questions can be sent to mpctccertifications.dpscs@maryland.gov. Please note that MPCTC only approves the programs and does not offer training. Approved training providers are listed in the below documents along with contact information.

Questions regarding all other aspects of Security Guard certification requirements and application process should be directed to the MD State Police. Visit mdsp.maryland.gov for further information, and contact msp.professionallicensing@maryland.gov or (410) 653-4500 with any questions.

All training content must be approved by the MPCTC Certification Unit prior to being conducted. The documents below provide details on how to apply for training and program authorizations and the required training objectives. The Security Guard training instructions detail the steps necessary to request these approvals, and provide the accepted application forms.
